Privacy policy
Draft, not yet reviewed by a lawyer. What it says about the app is accurate; the legal parts may change before On The Go is released.
In short: the On The Go app collects no data. Your settings stay on your Mac. There are no accounts, no third-party analytics, ads or trackers, and nothing is sold or shared. The only thing the app sends over the network is a tiny check to Apple's own connectivity test, described below. The few exceptions (this website's hosting, emails you send us, and what Apple tells developers) are covered further down.
This policy covers the On The Go app from the Mac App Store, the free On The Go Helper, and this website. They are made by PLACEHOLDER legal name ("we").
What we collect
The app collects nothing and sends us nothing. There's no account, no sign-in, no analytics, no crash reporting service and no advertising, and the app contains no third-party code that could collect anything. We only receive what you choose to send us (an email), and the combined figures Apple gives every developer, described under What Apple may share with us.
What stays on your Mac
To do its job, On The Go looks at a few things on your Mac. None of it leaves your Mac:
- the battery level, whether the Mac is plugged in, and macOS's own battery estimate;
- how warm the Mac is (macOS's heat level);
- whether the lid is closed;
- whether you're online, and whether the Mac is on an iPhone's Personal Hotspot (from its network address).
It saves your settings and a history of your last 20 sessions ("trips": when they started and ended, battery used, whether it ran on battery throughout, time offline, how often the Mac switched to your iPhone, the highest heat level, how many hotspot connection checks got through or failed, and why it ended) in the app's own storage on your Mac. It also remembers the last time macOS switched your Mac to your iPhone's hotspot (when, how long it was offline, and whether the lid was closed). Clear History in Settings removes the trips; deleting the app's data removes all of it. They aren't sent anywhere by us. If you back up your Mac, they're part of that backup like any other app's settings.
The only network request
On The Go sends one kind of request: a HEAD request to Apple's connectivity check, https://captive.apple.com/hotspot-detect.html. This is the same address Apple devices use to check they're online. The request carries no cookies and nothing about you, and it isn't stored or cached. It's sent in two cases:
- Hotspot connection checks: while On the Go mode is on and your Mac is on an iPhone's Personal Hotspot, every 30, 45 or 60 seconds (45 unless you change it), so the hotspot connection doesn't sit idle. These checks aren't sent on other networks or while the mode is off. You can turn these checks off in Settings → Hotspot.
- Leaving Now: once each time you open the Leaving Now window, to show whether you're online.
As with any connection, Apple's server sees your Mac's IP address. Apple handles that under Apple's privacy policy. We never see these requests.
The app opens web pages, such as this site or the helper's download page, only when you click a link or button, and they open in your browser.
On The Go Helper
The helper doesn't use the network and collects nothing. It keeps one small file, /Library/Application Support/On The Go Helper/lid-sleep-off, which only records that it has turned lid sleep off, so it can turn it back on if it stops unexpectedly.
What Apple may share with us
Apple gives us combined sales and download figures, by country, as it does for every App Store app. If you've chosen to share analytics with app developers in your Mac's settings, it may also give us anonymous usage figures and crash reports. None of these identify you. Apple's App Store also handles your purchase; we don't see your payment or Apple Account details.
This website
This website uses no cookies, no analytics and no trackers, and loads nothing from other sites. It's hosted on Cloudflare, which processes the technical details of each visit (such as your IP address and browser) to deliver the pages and protect the site from abuse. We don't use those details to identify you.
If you email us, we use your message and address only to answer you, and delete them when they're no longer needed.
Your rights
The only personal data we may hold is an email you sent us, and, through our host, the technical details of a visit to this website. We handle the email to answer you, and the visit details to keep the site working and safe; those are our legitimate interests. You can ask us at any time what we hold about you, and to correct or delete it, by writing to support@onthego.bar. You can also complain to your data protection authority.
Responsible for this data: PLACEHOLDER legal name, PLACEHOLDER postal address.
Children
On The Go doesn't collect data from anyone, including children.
Changes
If what the app sends or stores ever changes, we'll update this page and the date at the top before the new version is released.
